SPIRIT ALUM ANANIA PLAYING FOR PITTSBURGH PENGUINS AT PROSPECTS CHALLENGE

Former Spirit defenceman Andre Anania is one of 27 players named to the Pittsburgh Penguins’ roster for the 2023 Prospects Challenge being held in Buffalo, NY this week..

Anania scored 14 goals and added eight assists as a 16-year-old with the Spirit during the 2019-20 season. He was named to the Ontario Junior Hockey League’s 1st All-Prospect Team.

Anania spent the next three years with the Sudbury Wolves, the Spirit’s Ontario Hockey League affiliate, who selected him in the third round of the 2019 OHL U16 draft. The Richmond Hill produce was named the Wolves top defenceman last season.

The Penguins are one of six participating teams along with the Buffalo Sabres, Boston Bruins, Montreal Canadiens, New Jersey Devils and Ottawa Senators and will play three games total. Pittsburgh will open its play against the Bruins on Friday, September 15 at 3:30 PM. Following that, the Penguins will take on the Senators on Saturday, September 16 at 12:00 PM, and then conclude the tournament with a tilt against the host Sabres on Monday, September 18 at 5:00 PM.

Following the Prospects Challenge, the Penguins training camp will open with the first day of on-ice practice scheduled for Thursday, September 21.

Anania could return to Sudbury as an overage player this season.
